THREE BIBLE RIDDLES

Philosophy in general regard the existence of and conflict between good and evil as eternal-without beginning or end. The Bible reveals that truth, goodness and beauty are eternal, originate in God, and coexist with Him. Error, evil and ugliness originated in the devil, and will perish with him.

Ezek. 28:15 says the devil was made a perfect angel.: "Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee." He aspired tp be God.

The question arises, Can God create an angel that cannot sin? Yes, but it will be a robot with no choice of its own.

Psalm 8:5 says of man, "Thou hast made him a little lower than the angels." Man was made in the image of God. One attribute of God is independence of thought and freedom to act. In this, man is like God. Since man is a little lower than the angels, then the angels must also have independence of thought and freedom to act. Men and angels are free to obey God, and free to disobey. God gave perfect freedom to men and angels, because that is the basis of love. 1 John 4:8 says, "God is love." His ideal is to have all creatures choose love as there life principle, thus finally to fill the universe with love...

To the extent that men and angels enjoy freedom, they partake of divinity. Christ quoted Psalm 82:6, "I have said, 'Ye are gods: and all of you are children of the most High. But ye shall die like men, and fall like one of the princes.' "

Why must men having divinity die? Romans 6:23 says, "The wages of sin is death." Men have abused their freedom and broken God's law, thereby severing their connection with the Source of life. Now the Holy Spirit gives rebirth to holy characters in mortals, restoring in man the image of his Maker.

When God gave full freedom to men and angels, he took a great risk. They not only can disobey God, but even break away from Him, becoming His enemies and posing a great danger. This has actually happened. But God's ideal---a universe filled with love---has not changed. And freedom will still be preserved. For God has been willing to pay the price.

Creatures free to think will want to pass judgment on God's doings. And He is ready to meet that. Romans 3:4 says, "That Thou mightest overcome when Thou art judged."

Satan first judged God in Job 1:6-11, saying, "Doth Job fear God for naught? Hast not Thou made an hedge about him and his house, and about all that he hath on every side? Thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land. But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse Thee to Thy face."

God said to him, "All that he hath is in thy power."

Satan accused God of working on selfish principles, of winning Job's allegiance through bribery. Selfishness is the root of all sin. So Satan called God a sinner. The truth of his words hung on Job's actions. In the end Job withstood the cruelest trials. With children lost and boils from head to feet, he still feared God and "did not sin with his lips." Job. 2:10.

Job's story vindicates God's dealings with us. God wins the verdict of all men. The basic issue of the great controversy is that God is worthy of His name: He is truly God. His ruling principles of love and right are for all to see, and the truth "God so loved the world," has won the recognition of all generations.

The trials of Job are more or less to be experienced by every Christian. Every believer is to reveal the truth of God and expose the lies of Satan. If we fail, God is not glorified, Satan will triumph, and we will prove to be hypocrites.

In his trials Job didn't know that God and Satan were wagering over him. If he fell under the strain, and said a word against God, Satan would have boasted that he was wiser than God, with better insight into human nature, and therefore fit to replace God! Job's reaction decided the whole contest! He trusted God would not forsake him, so he praised Him in his trials. God knew Job would stay firm, and truly feared Him.

Job was a type of Christ. As Satan learned that Christ would take human nature, he planned to use all the means he had used to corrupt men, and make Christ another slave of sin. Many people have concluded that if Christ took the same nature as ours, He could not keep from sinning. That is man's opinion. Heb. 2:14 says, "Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, He also himself likewise took part of the same, that through death He might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil." Heb. 4:15 says,

"For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with our infirmities, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin." When Jesus began His ministry, the Holy Spirit led Him to the wilderness to fast for 40 days, after which the devil came to tempt Him to satisfy "the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life." Jesus repelled him three times, quoting "It is written," to be an example for us.

The final test was the toughest. As Creator, Christ was beaten, mocked, cursed by men he had made. He restrained the urge to strike back in vengeance. He practiced what He preached-love your enemies. He prayed for them, saying, "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do." As Lamb of God, He gave a sinless body, an offering for our race.

When Jesus was on earth, to men He said "Follow Me" 18 times. As Son of man, He was an example of overcoming sin, showing us how to use the word of God in resisting sin.

Some have said, "It can't be done! Jesus was born of a virgin; He was the Word made flesh. We cannot live like Him."

That is not true! Jesus was the Word made flesh; He can remake our fleshly natures after the Word. 2 Pet. 1:4 says, "Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust." As we repeat these promises for courage, we thereby eat Jesus' flesh and drink His blood, partaking of the divine nature. It is the secret of making our flesh like the Word.

Satan says that men can't obey God's law. Men who like to hear that go off guard, do not strive to overcome or seek holiness. Heb. 12:14 says, "Without holiness no man shall see the Lord," Men don't like to hear that, so say to men at church,

"Impossible! How many of you are holy? Raise your hands." No hand is raised, and they gleefully assert, "Before Jesus returns, no man can be holy." Holiness depends not on raising of hands. Only they whom God calls holy are holy. Rev. 22:11 says that before Jesus comes, there will be holy ones on earth: "He that is unjust, let him be unjust still, he that is filthy, let him be filthy still; he that is just, let him be just still, and he that is holy, let him be holy still. Behold, I come quickly, and my reward is with me, to give every man as his work shall be."
